A fortunate life – A. B. Facey

Imagine having to teach yourself to read and write because you were sent out to work at the age of eight. Born in 1894, the protagonist of this Australian autobiography lives a rough frontier life on the land, goes off to fight at Gallipoli, and raises a family through the Depression. Despite enduring incredible hardships, many of which we can barely imagine today, Facey’s overall message to readers is how ‘fortunate’ his life has been.
