The war of the worlds – H. G. Wells

One of the most significant and disturbing science-fiction novels of all time, The War of the Worlds opens with the narrator going to investigate a strange cylindrical object which has fallen from the sky. Imagine his horror as he comes to realise he is witness to an alien invasion of Earth, and he is forced to run for his life! Pitiless and menacing, the aliens kill with black smoke and heat rays, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their path.
