When Carl’s mother Kerry walks out for good, his sister Sarah heads off to Europe – terrified of the responsibility of bringing up her two younger brothers. Carl and Harley are packed off to stay with their aunt Beryl at Wattle Beach. However, far from caring for the boys, Beryl is only interested in keeping their Centrelink payments. Carl, an awkward lumpy 15 year old, is miserable in Wattle Beach: he doesn’t seem to be able to make friends and the townsfolk regard the brothers with suspicion. Yet, all Carl wants is the security of a loving family. This is a wonderful story, which will keep you hooked – Carl is an unlikely, but lovable hero.
