This is the incredible memoir of Solomon Perel, a German Jewish boy who in World War II escaped the Holocaust by hiding his Jewish identity and becoming a member of the Hitler Youth. In fleeing from Germany to Russia Solomon was separated from his family. When captured by the Germans he convinced them that he, too, was German. Accepted into their ranks Solomon changed his name to Josef Perjell and became the translator for the German Wehrmacht unit fighting on the front line in Russia. Adopted by his commanding officer he was then transferred to an elite training school for the Hitler Youth. Here he excelled and was often held up as a model Aryan, though he constantly feared for his life if his secret was discovered.
